NEASC Accreditation Report

The New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) released the findings from its recent accreditation visit to South Kingstown High School. With respect to academics, the school meets NEASC standards in some of the areas reviewed, but the report cites significant problems with the physical plant, and finds the school “does not meet standards” for accreditation in specific areas related to the building.

The report states:

“While instruction and programs are effectively delivered in the current SKHS building, the ability to do so more broadly and efficiently is limited by the physical facility … Concerns in the current building include limited science lab space, limited arts facilities, the small size of the auditorium and gym, the construction tech [Career and Technical Education] programming being in a separate building and the space for other CTE programs such as Allied Health being too small … Administrators cited maintenance concerns such as interior doors that will not lock, broken windows, leaks in the roof, and floor tiles coming up.”

The review provided “foundational element ratings” across six standards. For South Kingstown High School, the team rated the school “meets standards” in three of the areas. Two of the three areas that “do not meet standards” are related to the physical plant.

The NEASC report also references the proposed school building projects, stating, “Plans are in process for a new bond bill for the community that will remedy this situation. This plan will better position the high school to be contained on one campus with most of the athletic fields; provide a more comprehensive, modern, expanded, and streamlined approach to education; and enable maintenance of a more up-to-date building with modern systems.”
